How to Start A Painting Business

In 1999, I started my Denver painting business. Then called University Pro Painters, I quickly changed the name to Walls by Design in 2000. Over the last 21 years, I have experienced the ups and downs of business ownership.  I have made so many mistakes that, at one point, I almost lost it all. After a failed partnership, I almost went through bankruptcy and potentially a lost marriage. Thankfully, we saved it from the brink; we figured out how to build systems, learned how to effectively market, and we now have one of the best painting businesses in Denver, CO.

In 2016, I launched The Business Brush Group and The Business Brush Podcast, to help other painters avoid some of the pitfalls and mistakes that I’ve made over the years. Shortly after, we started holding an event called Crank.  The idea was to share my processes and systems that I have learned and implemented in WBD, so that younger and less-experienced painting contractors could start winning in their businesses faster.

To better serve the painting community, we’ve built and will continue to develop and offer an online version of our popular Crank content. Content that has proven to help painting contractors learn how to create systems, build processes, understand their finances, and teaches how to effectively market their painting business.

Before now the average cost to attend a Crank event in Denver was around $1100, plus three days away from company and family.  By building this online course, we better serve the painting community.
